The other day I started a re-read of a favorite book. It felt like a homecoming, a return to old friends and happy memories. I then wondered if I would feel this same way when re-reading the Qur’an. Would my eman be strong enough to feel that same sense of home, of belonging, of love?
There are peaks and valleys in our relationship with the Qur’an, and when you’re in a valley, it can feel difficult to climb up to the top. When you stay away from the Qur’an for some time, it can feel awkward to re-connect.
Think about your relationship with humans–sometimes when we ignore old friends for too long, there are resentments and ill-feelings when we reunite.
The beauty of the Qur’an, though, is that it is Allah’s speech. It is the wisdom and grace and forgiveness and mercy of Allah. It is the rope of Allah in our own hands, leading straight to Him. When you stray from it and then return, there is no ill-feeling, no rebuke. Just mercy.
“When the servant walks towards me, I come running…”
